"Joe served his country during World War 11 in the Navy as Gunner's Mate First Class on the light cruiser USS Concord, and the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa in the Pacific Theater. After the war ended he was a naval instructor in Washington, D.C. and San Diego, CA." "Joe married Arnetta Mingus at Palouse, WA on 12 Jan 1944. Joe and Arnetta made their home in Palouse where they raised a son, Mike Tompkins, and a daughter, Cheryl Tompkins (Ransom). Joe was a member of the Palouse Christian Church. He was also a member of the Spokane Roadrunner's RV Club, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing." "Joe is survived by his wife, Arnetta; their son and daughter-in-law Mike and Linda Tompkins, of Palouse; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Dan Ransom of Pullman; brother Eugene Tompkins of Roseville, CA; sister Ruth Tomson, of Rancho Murietta, CA; grandchildren, Shawn Tompkins and Wendy, Casey and Dusty Teague; and six great-grandchildren.
