Note: There are two tombstones in Grace Cemetery, Town of Castile. One reads. "Furnell____died 6/27/1912, 82 yrs, parents: Uriah and Henriette" . This Darius. From census data, Darius was born in 1830. The other tombstone reads, " Furnell, John, died 5/9/1909, 77 yrs, son of Uriah and Henrietta" As of 1860, Darius owned no real property and his personal property was valued at $40. Comparing this figure to the neighboring families, his reported personal assets were above average. According to the 1900 Census, Darius's father was from New Hampshire and his mother was born in New York. The transcription in the 1870 Census, can be interperted as showing a 'David' vs Darius, but as the other members of the family have been confirmed, Darius is correct. The 1860 Census taker wrote 'Fernal', in 1870, it was spelled Furnal and the 1880 Census taker wrote 'Fernall'. In 1868, Darius purchased about 3/4 acres of land from Philip Buck for $174. From the deed description and consulting maps of that period, it was located on the north side of East Center road, near the intersection of Rt.39 in the Town of Castile. Four years later, he bought .8 acres of land from Andrew Campbell (probably his son in law) for $150. Reviewing the deed description of both deed, especially the reference to one boundary being a 'butternut tree" and reference to the road that led to the river, the properties were probably adjacent to one another. The intersection was known as 'Castile Center' in 1905. Today (2005) only two houses remain at the crossroads. In 1874, there were 14 plus a school. Using the 1874 map, it appears that either of these houses was owned by Darius. One is still maintained, while the one next door is in very bad shape. Both are of the same architecture. By 1870, he valued the property at $175.,His son, Francis and his wife lived next door. Darius married Lydia Lee when he was 15 years old. She was 13!!! (according to the 1900 Census) The 1900 Census reported that Darius and his wife had 9 children with 3 living as of the date of the census. At that time, he was living with his daughter Slyvia Campbell and her family. "Death of Darius Furnal Darius furnal died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Campbell of Castile Center, Thursday night, June at eight o'clock, aged 82 years, one month, ten days.
