Notes
a. Note:   This Asa SUMMARELL (SUMMERELL) has been falsely named as the child of Barnes SUMMERLIN of Edgecombe County, NC. This Asa is in fact the child of Owen SUMMERELL who lived most of his adult life in Laurens County, SC. Asa married and moved to Alabama.
There was an Asa living in Edgecombe County who was the son of Barnes SUMMERLIN. In the 1820 census of Edgecombe County, NC Asa SUMMERLIN was the head of the household with (1) male 0-10; (1) male 26-45 (himself); (2) females 0-10; (1) female 16-26.
Barnes SUMMERLIN's will in the Edgecombe County, NC Will Book E, P. 162 is as follows:
  September 7, 1815 November Court, 1817
Wife: Anna, during life or widowhood, 150 acre plantation I now live on; 20 acres on South side of High Hill Branch, land where my daughter Polly PITTMAN lived when she dyed: 2 Negroes, sowel mare, riding chair, and or much of my other stock, household, and kitchen furniture as may be proper; son: Wilie, 300 acre plantation where he now lives, 2 Negroes, all the property I had before put into his possession; son Asa, 150 acre plantation he now lives on lying on the West side of Georgia Road, joining the land of Jesse RUFFIN, also the plantation of 150 acres lent to my wife where I now live, after her death, one Negro boy, horse, furniture, all property I put in his possession, 2 cows and calves, 6 head of sheep, Negro woman Mourning and her increase after death of my wife, be divided between my sons Wilie and Asa SUMMERLIN; Negro girl Dice lent to my wife and her increase and after decease of my wife to be divided between my gr.chil. : Patsy and Tempy PITTMAN, children of my daughter Polly PITTMAN, deceased, and my gr.dau.: Tempy, dau of Silas WATSON, et.; gr. dau.Elizabeth PITTMAN dau. of Polly PITTMAN, 21 acres of land together with plantation on South side of High Hill Branch, on the Georgia Road, between the Land of Asa SUMMERLIN, the GARRETTS, and Jesse RUFFIN, land lent to my wife.
Exr.: Willie SUMMERLIN , Starling WALLER
Wit: Nathan SESSOMS, Timothy GARRETT, Josiah FREEMAN
Thus the Asa SUMMARELL, son of Owen SUMMERELL born on July 8, 1816 is Not the son of Barnes SUMMERLIN since Barnes' will was written before this Asa was born.
