Notes
a. Note:   n the will between Pheaby and Caroline is a typo in the original will or perhaps it is I who have mistakenly condensed two of them into one. Assuming that the daughters are listed in the will in birth order, however, there isn't much room between births in that period to squeeze in both a Phebe and a Caroline. It is natural to assume that any of Samuel's children not mentioned in the will have already died. I have a death record on daughter Sophia of 21 Jul 1851, but that still leaves Samuel Jr., Mark, and Mary Matheson as not explicitly accounted for.Maddeningly, the will is dated "Nov. 6th" - but without a year. A year "1857" has been written above that date - but in a different hand. This year seems to be contradicted by the fact that the will is shown to have been "Proved" (on the oath of John McNab, one of the witnesses) on 1 July 1854 - an event which had to have occurred after the will was written. Since the will does not mention Samuel's wife, it most surely was written some time after Rachel's death on 31 Jan 1850. This would put Samuel's death sometime just prior to 1 July 1854.
Note:   There are several interesting and confusing aspects to his will. Note that "Pheaby" and "Caroline" appear to be listed in the will as two distinct daughters - although I have only a "Phebe Caroline" in my file. Perhaps the comma i
