 3. Robert Horsley was born about 1675 in New Kent County; died testate in 1733 in Hanover County, Virginia. His will was made 05 February 1733 and probated in Goochland County on 03 May 1734. He occupied the same tract as patented by his father Rowland (in New Kent County 1672) and in thet part of Hanover erected from New Kent in November 1720.
15 September 1732 Jonas Losson (Lawson) of the Parish of St. James, Goodhland County, sold to Robert Horsley of the Parish of St. Paul's Hanover County, for 5 shilling 200 acres with plantation in the Parish of St. James, Goochland County "on the north side of the Little Bird Creek."
By the 1730's, Robert Horsley had removed to Goochland County; 26 June 1731 Martin King to Robert Horsley 400 acres, Goochland County, north side of the Rivanna River above the mouth of Horsley's Creek on Robert Horsley's line for 40 shillings. Recorded 17 September 1731.
About 1699, Robert Horsley married in New Kent County Frances Bassett who was born in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County about 1676-1678 and died after her husband in 1733 in Goochland County. Frances was the daughter of William Bassett, born ca. 1643 in York County; died before May 1724 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, who married Anne, surname not yet identified who was born about 1645. The vestry book of St. Peter's lists the Bassett and Horsley families as neighbors so Robert and Frances may have known each other from childhood. William Bassett was sheriff of New Kent County in 1699 and was a member of the vestry of St. Peter's, serving as churchwarden in August 1700.
Sheriff William was the son of Thomas Bassett, born in England in 1617 and died about 1655 in York County, Virginia. About 1642 he married Mary ___,
  page 35
born ca. 1622 in England who died January 1677-1678 in York, Virginia. It is traditional in the Bassett family that this Thomas was the surviving child of William Bassett who was born ca. 1590 in England and died in Jamestown, Virginia in the Massacre of 1624. On 22 March 1623/1624 the record of the Virginia Company of London recorded the "William Bassett was one of those massacred by the savages of Virginia. Notice to be given to his famly in England that to the end that heyres may take heed for the property" (College People, about 2 miles from Henry City, Virginia); copy filed under Virginia Probate or Land and Prop. This claim require further proof.
