a. Note:   In Census 1891 RG12/358/91/25. Address: 330 East St. St Saviour. In Census 1901. RG13/224/39/15. Address: 26 Fortescue Ave. Hackney.
In 1901 they are living at 26 Fortescue Ave, Hackney and Robert is working as a clerk for the Hackney Furnishing Company.
The relationship with Ellen doesn’t last however and they separate. An article in The Times on 10-4-1908 reported:
Louisa Germain, was acquitted on an indictment for wounding Robert Germain, an inquiry agent, of Well street, Hackney, her husband. On March 12 the parties, who had not been living together for some time, met, and during a dispute and tussle the husband received a wound in the face from a hat-pin. The accused, who was said to be an industrious, hard-working woman, was discharged.
In 1911 Robert is living with Katherine in Edmonton, along with her parents, Alfred Walter & Katherine Webb. She is recorded as his wife, even though they didn’t marry until 1916.
Incidentally Robert was most likely still legally married to Ellen when he married Katherine. Ellen appears in the 1911 census living in Lambeth with her two children. There is no record they filed for divorce and she remarried 1918 in Croydon.
He had several jobs in his lifetime. At age 19 he was working as a paper cutter for a stationer. By age 28 he is recorded as a printers cutter. He also works as a private detective or inquiry agent for a time. In the 1901 census he is working as a clerk for the Hackney Furnishing Company. There are many references to the Hackney Furnishing Company on the internet. It apparently was a pioneer in the credit and hire purchase business, but fell into financial difficulties after 1910 and went into liquidation.
