Note: Death GRO Regd S Stoneham Dec Qtr 1916 Vol 2c page 157 age 83 The Times Thursday 23 November 1916 page 7 Sir J S Moore The death occurred at Botley, Hampshire, on Tuesday, of Sir John Samuel Moore, K.C.B. Paymaster-in-Chief, Royal Navy. Born in 1831, he entered the Navy in 1846 and served in the Cape Station during the Kaffic war in 1849-52. He took part in the naval operations of the Crimean campaign and was secretary to the Commodore in India during the Mutiny. During the Egyptian war of 1882 he was secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean Station, was present at the bombardment of Alexandria, and was mentioned in dispatches. From 1883-1891, when he retired, he was Fleet Paymaster on board the Royal yacht Victoria and Albert.
