Note: Florence's grandfather died when he was very young. She grew up in Monan, Indiana, located in the north central part of the state. Her family were farmers. Her mother married a very loving man from Chicago who came from a well-to-do Jewish family. He was a salesman. Florence's father was a victim in a train accident. He died from complications several years later. Florence had an older sister and a younger brother. Her brother shortened his last name to "Stone" in an effort to suppress his Jewish heritage. Florence was also very sensitive of her Jewish ancestory and, according to her son, David, avoided reference to it.
