Notes
a. Note:   According to 1860 U.S. Federal Census Lewis Knabe and his family lived next door to Gotlib Knabe and family. Gotlib is two years older than Lewis and I presume the two men are brothers. Interestingly both men's wives are named Louisa.
According to 1870 U.S. Federal Census Louis is now living with Gothlieb (note alternate spellings of names) along with Gothlieb's son, Herman, in the 18th ward of Cincinnati. Louis and Gothlieb are employed in a carpentry shop, Herman is 18 years old and a painter's apprentice. At the same time Gothlieb's wife, Louisa, is living in Pike Twp, Brown County, Ohio with 76 year old Henry Knabe, a basketmaker, and her children Louis, Adam, Joseph, Edmond, Sophia and Lizzie. I am presuming that Henry is the father of Gothlieb and Louis. Living in the adjacent household is Theodore Knabe, 50, and his wife, Caroline, and their children, Rachel, Caroline (Day) and her husband, Augustus Day, Catherine, George and Louisa. Theodore Knabe and Augustus Day are farmers. I presume that Henry is the father of Louis, Gothlieb and Theodore.
In 1860 census Lewis is married to Louisa with children Alvina, Sophia and Louisa. In 1870 census wife Louisa is missing and Lewis is shown living now in Brown County with Catherine as apparent spouse. Alvina and Sophia are still present, their ages matching 1860 census. Child Louisa is not listed, however, child Lizzie is listed and her age is one off of Louisa's 1860 census age. It seems evident that Louisa and Lizzie are the same child (my great grandmother). The next five children listed are less than 10 years old and, therefore not listed on the 1860 census. Their moither could be Catherine or Louisa - can't tell. Interestingly, in 1870 census Alivna, 17, for occupation lists "Helps mother". Obviously, Catherine is not her mother.
According to 1860 census Lewis and family live adjacent to Gotlib and family. I presume that Lewis (born 1830) and Gotlib (born about 1826) are brothers. Theodore Knabe lives near Lewis and family according to 1870 census and adjacent to Gothlieb's wife and children in 1870. I presume that Theodore (born about 1820) is also a brother. Since Theodore lived adjacent to Henry (born about 1797) and Christina (born about 1796) Knabe in 1860 I presume they are his (and, of course, his siblings') parents,
Lewis (sp. Louis) and wife Louisa as well as Gotlieb (sp. Gottl.) and his wife Louise arrived in Baltimore on 14 Sep 1853 aboard the ship Mississippi according to the passenger manifest. Even though Lewis's name is spelled Louis on the manifest and his birthday does not quite agree with other sources (off by 2 years) the facts that the four names appear together and the year, 1853, agrees with the year of arrival on the 1900 federal census for Louisa argue that these are, indeed, my ancestors (Louis/Lewis and Louisa) and Louis' brother, Gottlieb, and wife Louise.
