Notes
a. Note:   According to 1860 census the value of Gothlieb's personal estate is $60.00.
In 1870, according to census, Gothlieb now lives in Cincinnati's 18th ward with son, Herman. Gothlieb works in a carpentry shop and Herman is an apprentice to a painter. Wife, Louisa, and other children are living on the farm in Brown County. Listed along with Gothlieb and Herman is one Louis Knabe, born about 1830, who, for awhile, I thought was synonomous with Lewis until I found the latter on the 1870 census living with his family in Brown County.
1880 census record name was transcribed as Gotteib. The transcriber misread the cross on the "t" which also crossed the adjacent "l".
According to Civil War records Gottlieb Knabe, matching in age to this man enlisted in the Union Army on 20 Sept 1864 and joined Company F of the 181st Infantry as a Corporal on 7 Oct 1864. He mustered out on 14 Jul 1865 at Salisbury, NC. The company saw some casualties of war but lost many more men to to illness and accident than in battle.
