Note: on) APRIL 21, 1910 - JUNE 13, 1996 Wilbert Hagge was born in Walnut, Iowa, on April 21, 1910, the son of George and Lena Buttenschon Hagge. He was the second child and the first son. Irene was the eldest. Then Esther and Norman followed. Wilbert was affectionately called Snowball because he had white hair. He grew up on the farm and attended a local one room school. He left school after 8th grade to help on the farm. Growing up he was handsome, shy, adventurous, and very skinny! In 1930, he sold 16 sheep to buy his first car, a Model A Ford for $608.00. The family came to California in 1936. Wilbert wan 26. His first job was working at a gas station 12 hours a day, six days a week for $3.00 a day. His 2 bedroom house rented for $9.00 a month. Wilbert joined the Navy in 1942 as a Sea-Bee. He was able to travel to Alaska, South Korea, Sypan, Guam, Okinawa, and Honolulu. He was Honorably Discharged in November 1945. It was in Glendale that he met Marvel Rothfork at his sister's home. They were neighbors. Marvel was also from Iowa. She grew up in Holstein which was just 50 miles from where Wilbert grew up in Walnut. They married On June 8, 1946 and lived in Glendale. He began carpentering which was to be his occupation until he retired in 1972. Marvel was a nurse. She spent 22 years at Burbank Hospital when she retired at age 65. To this union three children were born: Penny in 1948 Matthew in 1951 Evelyn in 1956 The family moved to Burbank in 1953. Bert lived at 627 E. Elmwood Ave. the rest of his life. Wilbert would have celebrated his 50th anniversary this past June 8, the day before his hip surgery. Mr. Hagge and his family began attending Calvary Baptist Church in 1956 and remained active there until his health prevented it. He served the Lord as a Trustee, but will be remembered for remodeling the Sanctuary altar area and doing handyman jobs for families of the church. Most importantly, Wilbert and Marvel saw to it that their children were raised in a church that taught the Word of God. We were all baptized in 1961. Bert has 7 grandchildren: - Penny and Bruce live in San Diego with Krishell-17 1/2 and Jon Mark-15. - Matt and Jeanine live in South Carolina with Brian-18 and Allison-14. - Evelyn and Richard live in Washington with Sarah-12, Maren-8, and Quinn-5. Grandpa Bert was able to stay in his own home until he went into the hospital on June 5. That's just the way he wanted it. He passed away on June 13, 1996 at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marvel, his parents, and his sister Irene. He is survived by: Penny Gorden, his daughter and her family Matthew Hagge his son and his family Evelyn Patrick, his daughter and her family Esther Lohr, his sister and her husband Lee Norman Hagge his brother and his wife Delphine And several nieces and nephews The above was written by Penny Gorden and read at the Memorial service by Rev.
