Continued: A HISTORY OF MARVEL MAY HAGGE (by Penny [Hagge] Gordon) JANUARY 19, 1915 - JUNE 26, 1991 Marvel May Rothfork was born in Holstein, Iowa, on January 19, 1915, the daughter of John and Dorathea Erbs Rothfork. She was the second daughter. Evelyn was the eldest and two brothers followed, Harold and Gilbert. She grew up on the farm and attended local schools. She was the Valedictorian of her graduating class! She went on to study nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated in 1936 at age 21. She went on to work as a registered nurse in New York City and Seattle, Washington. She moved to Glendale in 1940 because her brothers were stationed here during World War II. It was in Glendale that she met Wilbert at his sister Esther's home. Marvel became Mrs. Wilbert HAGGE on June 8, 1946. To this union three children were born: Penny in 1948 Matthew in 1951 Evelyn in 1956 Wilbert and Marvel had been married 45 years this past June 8th. Mrs. HAGGE and her family began attending Calvary Baptist Church in 1956 and remained active there until her health prevented it. She served the Lord in many capacities, but will be remembered for her membership on the Social Committee and all the church dinners and potlucks that she set up and prepared for over the years. Most importantly she saw to it that her children were raised in a church that taught the Word of God. We were all baptized in 1961. Nursing was her profession and her passion. She worked at the French Hospital in Los Angeles until 1953. Her first two children were born there. In 1958, she began a twenty-two year career at Burbank Community Hospital where she became the night supervisor. Her third child was born there. Marvel retired in 1980 at the age of sixty-five. Marvel loved her family dearly and delighted in providing for them. She has seven grandchildren who were her joy. She left this message for them in 1983: "If I Were To Give My Best Advice To My Grandchildren" Respect and love your mother and father- they are the best friends you have- Accept the Lord Jesus as your Savior and attend a Bible believing church- Watch out for those cults (and there are many) Do well in school- your years spend in school will be the most imprtant years of your life- Be honest and trustworthy in everything you do.- I love you as only a grandparent can.- Love Grandma Marv and Grandpa Bert Hagge It became obvious that Marvel had Alzheimer's disease around 1984. The family was compelled to place her in a nursing home specializing in Alzheimer care on November 16, 1986. She survived another four and a half years. Marvel passed away on June 26, 1991 at the age of seventy-six. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and two brothers.
