Note: BIO:fROM THE SCHYLER SUN mAY 25, 1961 Gustave Hahn doesn't have to read the history of a chamging world- at least not the last 90 years of it. He has seen the changes take place. Mr. Hahn, who celebrated his ninieth birthday May 17, remembers bands of Indians roaming the prairies near Schyler and he was on television the first United States astronaut hurtled into space. Between the roaming Indians and the astronaut, Mr. Hahn has seen Colfax county transformed from a expanse covered with wild priarie grass into a thriving agricultural area. He has lived through grass- hopper plagues, drouths, floods, poor crops and bumper drops, taking it all in stride like others of his generation. A son of Mr. and Mrs.Peter Hahn, he was born May 17, 1871, in a lean- to at the form home of a family named Brunherder, five or six miles northwest of Schyler. The Hahns came to the Unites States in 1865 and known the Brunherders in Germany. When they came to Nebraska they stayed with the family until their home was ready. The Hahns first Colfax county home was a dugout seven miles north and 2 mile west of Schyler. It was here that grew up with his sister. Sophie- Mrs. John Kovar- and his brothers Chris, Will, and Lewis, all of whome are deceased. As a boy he herded cattle for homesteaders in the neighborhood. He attended rural school and as he grew older, helped his father on the farm. On Oct.21.1896, Mr. Hahn married Miss Anna Herling. They celebrated their sixtifourth wedding anniversary last fall. They lived on the farm until 1905, when they moved to Leigh where he engaged in the farm implement business. In 1935 Mr. Hahn disposed of his business and they moved to Schyler, which has been their home since. Mr Hahn likes to recount the many times the family made to Minnesota where they maintained a cabin on lake. Other recollections of activities when he was younger include a fruit farm they had in Texas and trips they made to California. Mr. and Mrs. Hahn are parents of two sons, Harry W. and Arnold H. of Fremont and they have five grandchildren and 11 great granchildren. SUnday the Harry W. Hahns were hosts at a surprise dinner at Western aCafe honoring Mr. Hahn. Others present were the Messrs, and Mmes Marvin Hahn and children from Fremont, Harry Hahn Jr. and children of Stromsburg, Newell Lowe pf Leigh, and Herbert H. Gaeth and Gale. After dinner the group went to the Hahn home for a social afternoon. On his birthday Wednesday May 17 the Harr Hahns, the Lowes and Mr. & Mrs. Walter Hahn of Clarkson came to his home to help him observe the anniversary. received from Clinton Hahn 4/28/92
