Note: Ira Day came to Greene County, Illinois in 1832. Prior to this time, most emigrants were from the southern states. Ira was part of "a small colony of thirty four [sic] persons coming from two western counties of Vermont by six weeks travel in ten covered wagons." The travelers came from Addison and Chittenden Counties, and Caleb Post served as the captain of the party. This was the third trip he made from Vermont to Illinois. He entered land in Apple Creek Praire on his second trip in 1824. In 1832, he visited his friends in Vermont and several of them followed him back to Illinois, his third trip. Ira came along on this trip with two wagons and five of his family. One of the travelers, E. G. Miner, had a "thorough knowledge of the maps of the States." West of Pennsylvania, they traveled a trifle north of Mr. Post's old route, striking the State [sic] at Danville, passing west through Decatur, . . . and to Springfield, Ill., where the condition of their teams and wagons surpassing the Southern emigrant, caused Frances of the Journal, to come to them for an inteview. This was the 13th of October." Ira Day purchased a home on 80 acres. All emigrants "getting as near the timber and old settlers as possible. Ignoring the prairie around where Jerseyville was afterward located."--written by M. B. Miner, Jersey County Democrat.
