a. Note:   Following the death of William, Sarah married Azariah Shinn according to civil law. However, as she was a Friend, and had transgressed the rules by her marriage to Azariah, her conscience urged her to make amends to the church. In July 1761, she sent a written acknowledgement to Haddonfield MM but failed to have it considered as she seemed not to have made arrangement for the children of her first marriage (as her husband William had directed in his will), and therefore could not be forgiven. Sarah argued the matter for several months but could not regain her place in the Church.
