Notes
a. Note:   Obituary from the Montpelier Argus and Patriot June 12, 1901: Leander H. Haines, one of the most respected citizens of Waterbury died last Thursday at the home of C.H. Haines, his nephew, as the result of a stroke of apoplexy experienced a week previous. Mr. Haines has been in feeble healthg for the past year or more and in the fall of last year he went to Southern Pines N.C. for the benefit of his health. He remained ther during the winter, returning late this spring. Since his return he has made his home with his daughters at Bellows Falls. He came to Waterbury about a month ago for the purpose of closing his house and packing up his goods preparatory to living in Bellows Falls, and it was while he was doing this that he suffered his shock. He was 67 years of age and was born in Cabot. He came to Waterbury in 1863, since which time he has been a resident of the town. He was a progressive business man, always honest and his word was as good as his note, and by careful management he won his way to the top of the ladder of fortune. His business career in town is worthy of special mention. In 1863, the year he came to Waterbury, he purchased the dry goods business then conducted by J. J. Stimson and for a time ran it alone. A few years later he took on a partner, Carl Richardson, and the business was conducted under the firm name of Haines & Richardson. His next business venture was in the flour and feed line. He took as a partner in that business. C.N. Arms, now of Montpelier, occupying the store conducted by P.D. Ladd. The firm name at that time was Arms & Haines. In 1871 the business was moved to the store now occupied by G.W. Atkins & Son. It was then that the grocery end of the establishment was added to it. G.W. Atkins became a member of the firm in 1887, and it was conducted under the name of Atkins & Haines until about a year ago, when Mr. Haines retired from active business life because of ill health. Mr Haines was a prominent man in the affairs of the town and State. During his life he has held many of the important town offices and for years was a member of the school board. In 1879 he represented his town in the State legislature. He was a man of sterling qualities and his opinions were eagerly sought. He was a member of the Congregational society and one of its deacons. He did much toward the upbuildind of the society. Mr. Haines is survived by a widow and five daughters, Florence, wife of C.F. Davis, of East Elmore, Bessie, wife of John Zabriskie, of New York, and Misses Abby, Carrie, and Mary, of Bellows Falls. There are also two brothers, Moses S. and Ira F. of Cabot, and two sisters, Mrs. Judith Bellows and Mrs Lelia Blodgett, of Cabot. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by Rev. L.H. Eliot assisted by Rev. G. E Ladd.
