Notes
a. Note:   N3556 BIRTH: My father, Ervin Gelnor Vold, was born on a farm in Worth County, Iowa on March 7, 1915 to Sithone "Susan" Turvold and Carl OttoVold. The family farm was located three miles south of Northwood,Iowa. Dr. E. H. Dwelle delivered the baby boy (Source: Iowa Births),the fifth child and youngest son.
The Vold family was Norwegian by descent. Carl and Sithone grew up on neighboring farms in Bristol township, attended the same country schools, and worshipped at Elk Creek Lutheran Church west of Kensett,Iowa. The Volds spoke Norwegian in the home, worshipped and became confirmed in the Norwegian tongue, and read Norwegian language newspapers. It is little wonder that "Little Ole"' as he was nicknamed, had to repeat kindergarten. He could not speak English.
It was not until Irving Gilnor Vold was a young man that he discoveredthe correct spelling of his name on the birth certificate was ErvinGelnor Vold. The spelling of the name was of little concern - for everyone called him "Ole" or "Paul."
The nickname, 'Paul,' was given to him when he started school. Claire Shaw, his best friend, parents gave him an old horse to make the three mile trip from the farm on Highway 65 into the Northwood school. The horse was liveried during the day with the blacksmithl ocated across the street from the elementary school. The sight of the little boy galloping hard and fast into the school yard brought about the nickame, "Paul Revere," and shortened to Paul by his family and close friends. Of course, I called him Dad.
Dad's sister, Aunt Fran, told me that she was the match maker when Dad met my mother, Rose Miller. Aunt Fran served as the "mail carrier"when Mom wrote notes to Dad. Mom and Dad started dating the spring of mother’s senior year. After graduation in 1937, Mother went to El Paso, Texas to live with her dad, C. C. Miller. Spurred on my Grandma King Painter, my dad followed mother to Texas and proposed to her.
MARRIAGE: The State of Iowa issued Marriage License: SO242548. Witnesses to the Marriage: Mr. and Mrs. Gilmore Halland. The license application states: First Marriage for Both; Groom's parents: Carl O. Vold and Susan Turvold; Brides Parents: C.C. Miller and Ruby King; September 5, 1937.; Officiant, Rev. C.E. Jarun. Cresco, Iowa. The marriage was an elopement and not a necessity, yet, my grandparents Vold watched the new bride’s tummy for months.
  SUMMA:

Irving died on November 1, 1977 of lung cancer. To say thathe is missed by his many friends is a tribute to his life. Irving's daughter said that in his heart, Northwood was always home."
Cynthia Vold Forde wrote: “I have wonderful memories of my father teaching me to drive, or taking me with him for a day out into the country where he would point out his favorite places to hunt or fish. He said that his best moment inlife was my birth, watching the oxygen change the color of my skin from blue to pink. I wish there had been more time for long conversations. He said his greatest regret was moving the familyto Californa separating our family. We never quite believe time is running out until it does. I miss my dad.”
