Sjur (Sever) was the first to emigrate. He left Norway on May 19th,1852, and he arrived in New York City, on July 9th. After a shortstay in the East he came to Wisconsin where he remained for fiveyears. When he came from the East he brought with him five yoke ofoxen which were much in use at the time. Sever came to Worth County,Iowa from Wisconsin in 1857; he settled on a homestead in Section 32,Grove township. The nearest market was at McGregor, about 150 milesaway. In 1862, he married Gunnel Simonsdts, and their son, Bendik,was born in 1864. Gunnel died that same year, possibly duringchildbirth. That same year, Sever built a log house by the Shell Rockriver which was uncovered as it was remodeled 90 years later by JohnBarker. That house may have been built on the 235 acres in Section 19of Northwood township or what is now called Grove township. He soldhis old homestead in 1864 before he bought the acreage in Section19.
In 1869, Sever married Engeborg (Isabell) Guttremsdtr. Nordlagen fromNess, Hallingdal, Norway. They had 8 children. The family movedfroom the farm to Northwood on May 8th, 1899, and Sever lived intownuntil his death February 4th, 1916, only one day from his 87thbirthday.
For a time, Sever owned all of Block 10 in the NE part of the city.Their house is located at 97 North 14th Street and is still there.Their daughter, Tillie Siverling lived next door at 95 N. 14th Street.
Isabell died in 1927. Both are buried at Shell Rock cemetery, justwest of Northwood.
