Note: Rebecca or Rebekah? The birth registration copy from London's Somerset House gives her name as Rebecca. Obituary (undated, probably Shelby Sun) Rebekah (Preparer note: spelled with a 'k' here and on her death certificate) Steel was born April 21, 1847 at Fowberry, England (Compiler note: this is a farm estate east northeast of Wooler, Northumberland, England). She was baptized in infancy and when young joined the Presbyterian Church on confession of faith, and always lived a consistent christian life. She married April 20, 1870, at Wooler, England to John Inness. They were the first couple married in the new church at Wooler, and the church presented them with a fine family bible which is still a treasured possession. They sailed from Liverpool, England for America May 12, 1870. They set up housekeeping on a farm near Hanover, Indiana, after 2 years they went to Galva, Illinois for about a year, then came to Nebraska in March 1873 and took the old homestead two miles south and one half mile east of Shelby. They joined the Methodist church soon after coming to Nebraska, and became Charter members of the church in Shelby. The children are Mrs. Margaret Scott of Shelby, Andrew Inness, Osceola, Mrs. Christina Carlson, Albion, Nebraska, Mrs. Nina McKeag and William Inness of Shelby, and John G. Inness, deceased December 12, 1912. There are 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. They moved from the farm to Shelby in the spring of 1909 where they have lived ever since. Mrs Inness passed peacefully to her reward Sunday morning July 13. Mrs. Inness possessed strength, fineness and nobility of character. Reared in an old civilization she adapted herself to the needs, privations, loneliness and danger of a new country. She was a true pioneer, a helper of the sick and needy whether rich or poor, a woman of many kindly ministries, a good homemaker, her children and all who knew her will ever bless her memory. She was a faithful worker in the church and W.C.T.U. She belonged to the Missionary Society and the Dorcas society, and helped in every department of church life. The last gathering she attended was a meeting of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society. While she rests from her labors, her works do follow her.
