a. Note:   ac Bell",as recorded in "Germans to America". Their firstchild was born in New York City. Shortly after ther settled in LapeerCo.,Michigan. Living first in Elba, then in Hadley.
 Some family legend says Rudolf left Europe to avoid militaryservice.We find though that on 23 dec 1863 he joined the Union Armyand marched away to war, leaving Mary alone with 5 small boys toraise. Another legend says he was of minor nobility in Switzerland andleft because the land was so poor. This legend has he and Marysailing away on a wedding voyage to America, though we know fromrecords that they didn't marry until they arrived in New York.
 Rudolf returned from the war to his work and his family. He wasactive in commuity events and in 1883, joined the George C. WhitneyPost 188 of The GAR in Hadley,MI Rudolf,Mary and 5 younger sons movedto Bad Axe,Huron co.,MI about 1885. John stayed in Lapeer Co,Andrewmoved to Port Huron,and Henry settled in Bay City.
 As in Hadley,Rudolf was part of many civic groups and was a foundingmember of the Bad Axe Band. The Bad Axe library has a booklet called "Landowners in 1890 PartIV" in which Rudolf is listed as owner of "40 acres in Verona Township16 North Range 13 East". This property on the corner of Hellems andNeeb Roads was still farmland in 1995.The family lived on Maim Streetin Bad Axe in the second story over Rudolf's carpentry business.Todaythe building is home to the Dollar Store. Rudolf died Jan 28 1898 in Bad Axe and is buried in Colfax Cemetary,and his grave is marked by two stones.
