Note: N2 Dorothy M. Kimball is the name her adoptive parents gave her. I've been unable to discover who her birth parents were. 4 Oct 1903: Matilda W. Atkinson of the Maine Children's Home Society in Augusta filed for guardianship of her. 26 July 1904: Adoption by Augustus (age 61) and Mary (age 50) finalized. Augustus's three grandchildren--the children of his daughter Carrie, by his first wife, Isabelle--were older than Dorothy. 1910 Census, Dexter, Penobscot Co, Maine: age 7, adopted daughter of Augustus & Mary. 1920 Census, Augusta, Maine: Age 18, boarder in the household of Harold Aubrey Allan, 36, who was State Agent for Rural Education. His family: wife Izora (nee Shorey), 36; son Shorey, 8; daughter Margaret, 14 months. Dorothy graduated from Cony HS in Augusta in June 1920. She may have been working for the Allans in some capacity and probably moved with them to Washington DC around 1922, when Harold began his job as business manager of the National Education Association there. (Entry in 1923 Augusta city directory says "Allan Harold A (Izora) agt Supt Schools moved to Washington DC." The 1924-27 Washington DC city directories show the Allans at 3533 Holmead Pl NW.) In 1924 Dorothy was working as a telephone operator in Washington DC; res 3512 Tenth Ave NW.
