Note: "David (Dave) Mullendore was five years old in 1878 when his family came to Elk County. He did not have the advantages of much schooling but he had a natural drive and a kindly nature, and the attitude toward hard work common to his generation with which virtue he instilled his sons and two young brothers whom he helped to raise. Obsessed with the thought of making the run for Cherokee land when President Cleveland proclaimed the forthcoming opening, he persuaded his brother Erd to accompany him. It was an arduous and exciting experience and they did succeed in winning claims for themselves, due in part to the careful planning of their expedition. Though Erd stayed in Oklahoma, David returned to Elk County and in 1896, he married Metta Blanche (Mettie) Kellam, daughter of Nathan and Ellen (Yantis) Kellam.....They took over the management and operation of the farm when his father's health failed. Ray and William Clinton, then only 8, lived with them. Dave was a helpful friend and neighbor in any emergency. He advanced ranching in the county and helped to build a thriving community around Howard. He served two terms as a representative in the Kansas Legislature (1927-1931). Eventually, the J.W. Donnel and the A.R. Rhodes farms were purchased and, with other additional acreage, their holdings grew to two thousand acres. Becuse of his efforts in the field of ranching, he was appointed president of the corporation which later became the Production Credit Corporation, serving, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado, his office being located in Wichita. Dave was responsible for a Production Credit office being located in Howard. He suffered a fatal heart attack in Oklahoma during a meeting there. Mettie and David had two sons, Harold and Noel. Each attended Highland Rural School, Howard High School and college." Note: Gertrude Mullendore compiled the data for this history. -----"Elk County, A Narative History of Elk County and Its People," Elk Co. Historical Society, Howard, Kansas, 2nd printing, 1986. _________________________________________ "The Wrangler", Vol. XII, Number VI Ninth District PCA's June 1947 PRESIDENT DAVID L. MULLENDORE At Alva, Oklahoma, June 2,...the Production Credit Corporation and association of the Ninth District lost their "Chief". President Mullendore had opened the meeting at Alva of directors and secretaries of PCA's in Northwest Oklahoma with a few brief introductory remarks and was sitting at the conference table when he died. The "Chief" died "in the saddle", as he wanted. His leadership, courage, drive and sound counsel over the past fourteen years have made a steel-cut impression on the System that will defy the erosive action by the sands of time. He was truly the "Daddy" of the System in this district. Under his leadership, Production Credit Associations in this district ahve been built from just "a plan" in 1934 to stolid "Homes of Dependable Credit". His pioneering spirit will always be an inspiration to those who follow. His was a long, eventful life. A pioneer with his family in Kansas, one of those who made the run for claims in the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma, a successful ranch operator, public servant, and loyal husband and father. He has sown many seeds along his pathway of life that have grown into mighty oaks, and he always considered Production Credit the strongest tree of all. Future generations will be glad that "Dave" Mullendore lived. ____________________________________________ 1910 U.S. Census, Elk County, Kansas Mullendore, David L.
