The 1850 Hopkins Co.Census indicates that Joshua Hanks was born about 1794. Adin Baber's book HANKS OF VIRGINIA AND WESTWARD says that he was born Feb 17, 1787. He does not indicate where he obtained the birthdate. Joshua was not listed in the 1810 Christian Co. Kentucky Census, but John Hanks and Thomas Hanks were. Joshua, Thomas, and John are all in the 1820 Census in Hopkins Co. Ky. Joshua probably became of age between the 1810 and 1820 census and that is why he shows up on the 1820 but not the 1810 census. This idea supports the birthdate of 1794.

According to Marian G. Hammers, Researcher in Madisonville, Kentucky,
Hester Gatlin Hanks must have died between 1870 & 1880. She was in the 1870 Census but not in the 1880 Census in Hopkins Co. Kentucky.
Also, Eliza A. Hanks, is in the 1850 Hopkins Co. Kentucky Census with her parents, however, she is not listed with the heirs of Joshua Hanks in the Court Records. She either died or because she was a minor wasn't listed as an heir.
New Information: I received a copy of the book FOUNDERS OF THE GATLIN FAMILY, by David Walter Gatlin. According to his information, Esther/Hester Gatlin Hanks died in 1883 or 1884.

Letter from Craig A. Whitfield, Mishawaka, Indiana, dated January 27, 1995 in response to a letter I wrote him. Paula Eubanks. "You asked me if I knew where Joshua & Ester Hanks are buried. I don't know for sure but I think I have an idea. My gg-grandfather Joseph E. Whitfield owned a farm in White Plains, KY. According to my older family members, JP Hanks was born there. I visited what was left of the farm a few years ago. Now here is where it get interesting.....Supposedly a lot of J.P. Hanks kin were buried on that farm back behind the barn. I would think that possibly Joshua may have been one of of them. I don't doubt maybe some of his brothers could have been buried there too. Who knows, because J.E. Whitfield's first wife died, (my GG-grandma) and he remarried and had a step-son named Dan Slates who took possession of the farm on inheritance. Anyway, Dan Slates bulldozed the tombstones, and turned the hogs loose in the graveyard. I shudder to think what information was lost by him doing that one stupid act. My g-uncle told me that story again just the other day (he's 78 years old). He said J.P. Hanks would roll over in his grave if he knew that. But if you figure JP Hanks was born there, it would only make sense his grandparents, uncles, etc. might be buried there."
NOTE: Dan Slates is the man who owns the old Miller property where Fredrick P. and Mary Miller are buried. They are the parents of Jacob T. Miller who married Elizabeth P. Hanks, daughter of Joshua & Ester Gatlin Hanks. I spoke to Marian Hammers about the Hanks cemetery and she doesn't seem to think that the stones were still standing when she and members of the Hopkins Co.Kentucky Historical/Genealogy Society compiled cemetery records several years ago. I think she said in the 1950's.
I have received another letter from Craig Whitfield since the one spoken of above, and he is not sure that this story is accurate. He seems to think that maybe there were very few stones standing in the early 1900's.
He says the above story is still being circulated in his family, so he thinks there must be some validity to it. Paula Eubanks

Since getting a copy of the book, FOUNDERS OF THE GATLIN FAMILY, I
see some disagreements in dates of births etc. I am going to use David Gatlin's dates since I belive he had better access to the information than did Adin Baber because Mr. Gatlin was from Madisonville, Hopkins Co. Kentucky. Where I have better information than Mr. Gatlin does, I have used that instead of his and where Mr. Baber gives information that Mr. Gatlin doesn't give.
