a. Note:   Adin Baber in his book, HANKS OF VIRGINIA AND WESTWARD, gives the birthdate of Caroline Clark Hanks as April 15, 1827. Mrs. Hammers the Genealogist from Madisonville, KY gave me the date for her birth as March 17, 1830.
  Info. on their children came from 1852-1862 birth records of Marshall Co. Kentucky. There could be other children.
  According to Mr. Gatlin, James, son of Caroline Clark Hanks and A.P. Averitt, "was killed while serving as Constable in Nortonville, in about 1888, by Dr. John Pendley. His death was held a justifiable homicide."
