Note: He went by Bernard or "Mac" after he left home. Mac was his nickname in the Air Force which most of his family and friends
called him. Before he left home to join the Air Force, his
family called him Clare which he hated because he thought it was
a girl's name. I now speculate that he may have been named after
Co. Clare in Ireland and wonder if the family (or part of it)
originally came from there instead of Northern Ireland. I also
remember a story about his nurse choosing his name.
