a. Note:   William served during the Civil War in the 144th Illinois Infantry Regiment (History of Madison County, IL ., published 1882 W. R. Brink & Co, Edwardsville, IL). The 144th Illinois Infantry Regiment was organized at Alton, IL mustered into service for one year October 21, 1864 and ordered to St. Louis, MO., with duty in that District till July 1865. Regiment lost 69 by disease during service and was mustered out 14 July 1865. (A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, vol III Regimental Histories by Frederick H. Dyer 1908)
