Harley 1118 Colby Avenue Everett, Washington Dear Mrs. Harley: I am referring to my letter of 26 Apr 1945, which confirmedthe death of your husband, Staff Sergeant Joseph M. Harley,Jr. on 10 Apr 1945 in Germany. The report of the investigation conducted by the militaryauthorities to determine the circumstances surrounding yourhusband's death has now been received in the WarDepartment. This report discloses that Sergeant Harley diedalmost instantly on the afternoon of 10 Apr 1945, in hiscompany area in Thamesbruck, Germany, as the result ofinjuries received when a pistol, which he was examining,was accidentally discharged. Your husband was on a dutystatus at the time of the accident. The Quartermaster General, Washington, D. C., hasjurisdiction over matters pertaining to the burial of ourmilitary personnel who die overseas and any inquiry,regarding the location of your husband's grave, may beaddressed to that official. The tragic and untimely death of your husband is deeplyregretted and my heartfelt sympathy is with you in yoursorrow.
