Note: Vermont 1790 census, page 47; names heads of Families: Phillip Bemis FW males > 16 years old, including head of families; one FW females>16 years old, including head of families; one I don't know if this is 'my' Phillip Bemis, but I know he was probably still living then. I am including the record for further research later. --------------------- Information from the History of Joseph Bemis by T. Draper, 1900. Originally got the information on this line from Elva Petz application to the DAR dated 1932; she did not list any sources for her information, but the Draper book seems likely. ---------------------- From: RogerCubs@aol.com Date: Mon, 29 Nov 1999 13:46:28 EST Subject: My Bemis line To: BEMIS-L@rootsweb.com Direct Descendants of Joseph Bemis 1 Joseph Bemis .... +Sarah .. 2 Joseph Bemis ........ +Anna ....... 3 Phillip Bemis b: Abt. 1700 d: Aft. 1782 ............. +Elizabeth Lawrence m: November 21, 1723 This is the first I have seen for this date of marriage, and I do like it better than the one that Elva had listed.... makes all his children legitimate at any rate...... ----------------------- The History of Ashburnham, Massachusetts indicates that Philip Bemis was probably the son of Joseph. Other records, including the logic of birthdates (the elder Joseph was born about 1619, and his son, Joseph Jr., was born in 1651, and Philip was born about 1700) would indicate that Philip was more likely the son of Joseph Bemis, Jr. Philip lived in Cambridge from 1723 to 1738. He was married in 1738 and moved to Westminster, where he and his wife were the third settlers. Hewas considered to be a man of influence and character. "...m. Nov 21, 1723. Elizabeth Lawrence. They settled down inWestminster in 1738, and he was the third permanent settler in that town. They had probably previously lived in Cambridge. Phillip was a plain, substantial and much respected citizen, though he held no office. The exact dates of death of his wife and self, are not known, though he was living in 1782. He had in his family a waif or orphan boy named Daniel Munjoy."
