He was corporal in the militia company. He served the town of Watertown as tithing-man, as a member of the school board, as highway surveyor, as selectman, and on important special committees. He was one of the leading citizens of his time. --------------------------- .(II) John Bemis, son of Joseph Bemis (1); born at Watertown, Massachusetts, August, 1659; died there October 24, 1732; married (first) at Watertown, 1680, Mary Harrington, daughter of George and Susannah Harrington, born January 12, 1663-4; died at Watertown September 8, 1716; married (second) January 1, 1716-7, Mrs. Sarah (Holland) Phillips, widow of Jonathan Phillips and daughter of Nathaniel Holland. Her mother was Sarah (Hosier) Holland, second wife of Nathaniel. Sarah (Holland) Bemis was born at Watertown, November 30, 1662; died there prior to 1726; married (third) at Watertown, May 30, 1726, Mrs. Judith (Jennison) Barnard, born at Watertown, August 13, 1667; died there. She was the daughter of Ensign Samuel and Judith (Macomber) Jennison, and widow of James Barnard, who was born at Watertown, January 14, 1666-7; died there January 23, 1726. Ensign Jennison was born at Watertown 1645; died there October, 1701. His wife, Judith Macomber, died at Watertown, March 1, 1722-3. John Bemis sold, April 26, 1701, for fifty-six pounds, a half of the quarter of Alcock's farm of nine hundred acres in Marlboro. With his son-in-law, Daniel Child, he bought, April 6, 1702, of Nathaniel Saltonstall (Fellow of Harvard College) one hundred and sixty acres of land in Watertown, Lot No. 30 origanally granted to Sir Richard Saltonstall. New York, 1907. -------------------------- JOHN, Watertown, brother of Ephraim, married Mary, daughter. of Robert Harrington, had Beriah, b. 23 June 1681; Susanna, 24 Dec. 1682; Joseph, 17 Nov. 1684; John, 6 Oct. 1686; Mary, 24 Sept. 1688; Samuel, 1690; Lydia; Hannah, 9 Oct. 1694; Isaac, 1696; Jonathan, 30 Apr. 1699, prob. d. soon; Jonathan, again, 17 Nov. 1701; Abraham, 26 Nov. 1703; Susanna, and Hannah, tw. 3 Dec. 1705; and his wife died 8 Sept. 1716. He married 1 January following as Bond says in two places, tho. in later passages he twice says 27 Feb. Sarah, widow of Jonathan Phillips, daughter of Nathaniel Holland; and next married 30 May. 1726, Judith, widow of James Barnard, eldest daughter of Samuel Jennison, as the same indefatig. author instructs us; but by neither had children.
