a. Note:   --------------------- BIGELOW, JOHN, Watertown 1636, black-smith, found by Mr. Somerby to be son of Randle of Wrentham in Co. Suffk. and bapt. 16 Feb. 1617, of course by the hand of Rev. John Philip, the rector, who came to our country two years after B. and liv. some time at Dedham, but on the overthrow of the Bishops' domination in Eng. went back to his. old living. He m. 30 Oct. 1642, Mary, d. of John Warren, wh., Bond says, was the earliest m. on town rec. Had John, b. 27 Oct. foll.; Jonathan, 11 Dec. 1646; Mary, 14 or 18 Mar. 1649; Daniel, 1 Dec. 1650; Samuel, 28 Oct. 1653; Joshua, 5 Nov. 1655; Eliz. 15 or 18 June 1657; Sarah, 29 Sept. 1659; James; Martha, 1 Apr. 1662; Abigail, 4 Feb. 1664; Hannah, Mar. 1666, d. very soon, as [p. 176] did, also, a s. without name in Dec. 1667. His w. d. 19 Oct. 1691, and he m. 2 Oct. 1694, Sarah, d. of Joseph Bemis of W. and d. 14 July 1703. His will of 4 Jan. of that yr. was pro. 28 July foll. His inv. shows good est.

 Sarah, born January 15, 1642-3; married at Watertown, October 2,1694, John Bigelow, born in England, 1617; died in Watertown July 14, 1703; blacksmith; freeman in 1652; selectman in 1665-70-71; married, before, Mary Warren (this was the first marriage recorded in Watertown, Massachusetts), who died October 19, 1691, Sarah being, it is said, his third wife.

  On another page of the same book, Genealogical and Personal Memoirs ibid, is the following history with the Bigelow family name:
  GEORGE ALEXANDER BIGELOW.
 John Bigelow (1), proprietor of Watertown, in New England, as early as 1642, was the pioneer ancestor of George Alexander Bigelow, of Worcester, and, in fact of all the American families of that surname. He bought a house and lot in Watertown in 1649 and took the oath of fidelity in 1652. He was a blacksmith by trade. He acquired considerable real estate and carried on a farm. His homestall was bounded by those of Richard Ambler, William Parker, Thomas Straight and Miles Ives.   He married (first), October 30, 1642, Mary Warren. She died October 19, 1691. He married (second), October 2, 1694, Sarah Bemis, daughter of Joseph Bemis, of Watertown. Mr. Bigelow died July 14, 1703, aged eighty-six years. His will was made January 4, 1703, and proved July 23, 1703.
 The children of John and Mary Bigelow were:
 John, born October 27, 1643;
 Jonathan, born December 11, 1646;
 Mary, born March 14, 1648, married Michael Flagg, ancestor of the Worcester county Flaggs;
 Daniel, born December 1, 1650, resided in Framingham;
 Samuel, mentioned below;
 Joshua, born November 5, 1655, resided in Watertown and Weston;
 Elizabeth, born June 15, 1657, married Lieutenant John Stearns;
 Sarah, born September 29, 1659, married Isaac Learned, of Sherborn, near Framingham;
 James, lived in Watertown;
 Martha, born April 1, 1662;
 Abigail, born February 4, 1664, married Benjamin Harrington;
 Hannah, born March 4, 1666, died young;
 a son, born and died December 18, 1667.
