Became an installer for the phone company instead. On the side, he opened a camera store, which Martha managed. Soon, he had three stores and branched out into selling electrical appliances. He used the name Leon Burnley or Burley. He suffered financial losses in the Depression and eventually had to sell his inventory. With help from his sister Rose, he bought a house in Laurelton and the family lived in Queens.
