Note: Her name on arrival was "Gitel." Apparently she did the same thing as her cousin, Fay Zeitlin did, and made herself American-born. She insisted that she was born in New York and never lived in the slums of the Lower East Side. Although her marriage license lists her as Rose Gwendolyn, her daughter knew her as Rose Gertrude.
She won a scholarship to the Hefley Business School, studying typing and shorthand. Ultimately, she took a high school equivalency test to get her diploma. She took some pre-law classes in college but never graduated.
On the 1910 federal census, age 21 and at home, she is listed as a secretary at a trust company. It also indicates that she was not born in the U.S., although on her marriage license, she said she was.
Active in the Jewish Federation. Engagement announced in the New York Times on 9 and 16 February 1914.
Supposedly loaned her brother Leon and his wife money to buy a home in Laurelton, Queens, when they lost the mortgage on their home on Schaefer St. Also brought Fanny Zeitlin Wachsner over from Europe and supported her. Dorothy says Rose was wealthy and generous.
