Notes
a. Note:   California Death Index says date of death is 28 Jan. 1946.
Andrew lived as a foster child with John Dollinger and his wife, Katherine Hagele, in Hudson Township, Edmonds Co., South Dakota. He was apprenticed to the Dollingers from the Glenwood School for Boys in Chicago. The family story is that he was the son of either Morris or Adolph Barling and Julia, the mistress/wife of one of them. A birth certificate for Andrew has never been discovered.
Andrew was found sleeping in the streets of Chicago when he was about 8 or 9, c. 1895-6, and was made a ward of the juvenile court system. He was sent to the Glenwood Home, where the policy was to take street urchins and make them decent citizens by apprenticing them to Midwestern farmers. The Dollingers were part of a group of Russian-German immigrants. They were good to Andrew but he was first and foremost a farmhand. Mary was the daughter of a nearby farmer.
According to the 1905 state census, he had been in South Dakota since he was ten, c. 1898.
