Notes
a. Note:   Family tradition in the MacCallums was that three brothers came to Newfoundland from Scotland and then to Oswego County. One of the three brothers was to have gone to Orleans or Jamestown, New York, where either he or his son was a doctor. Unfortunately there is no verification of the story. Research of the existing records only shows possibilities and no easy answers. The spellings vary between McCollum, MacCallum, and M.Callum. Some of the established facts are as follow. There are no other MacCallums of the same age as the eldest William, but there are others who could be brothers of William Jr, most likely James M.Callum (7/31/1817 - 2/2/1854) who is buried in the Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Parish. The grave is not far from that of William Sr. Next to the grave of James is his wife Priscilla and children Charles and Albert. A naturalization card from Oswego shows a James McCallan [sic] of Parish born 1818 in Glasgow, Scotland, naturalized April 4, 1848. Priscilla is listed in the 1855 NY Census in Parish with 2 sons, Charles and Albert, and daughter Jocelia. Another likely candidate is Duncan McCallum who was naturalized December 9, 1844. He was born in Great Britain, but no age was listed. He is likely the same Duncan McCallum who died intestate in the City of Oswego on Feb 28, 1867, leaving widow Clarissa Ann and three young daughters. If the family tradition is correct, then William Sr may have brought three sons, William Jr, James, Peter and/or Duncan. This idea is supported by the fact that William Jr named one of his sons "James Duncan." He did have another son, Peter, who could be the one who went to Jamestown or Orleans. All of this is conjecture, but may give a lead for further research.
