Note: John Henry McNeal was the son of William Edmondson Mcneal (born 07 March 1830 in Talbot County, Maryland) and Catherine Mauck (born 11 October 1829 in Harrison County, Indiana) His parents were married 07 November 1852 in Peoria County, Illinois. He married 14 July 1880, Rose Anna Garner, born 20 March 1855, daughter of Daniel Garner and Mary Ann Sowash Garner Demoss. Daniel Garner, son of Charles Garner, married Mary Ann Sowash, daughter of Jacob and Rosanna Sowash on 03 September 1848 in Lawrence County, Illinois. There is a book about the Sauvage/Sowash /Soash family written by Richard Soash of Wichita, Kansas that takes Mary Ann's family back to the immigrant Johannes H. Sauvage who came to America in 1728. Included in the book are Daniel and Mary Ann Garner's descendents. The Garner family was listed on a farm census in 1856 in Huron Twp., DesMoines County, Iowa (North of Burlington, Iowa). It showed they had lived in Iowa for 4 years. Daniel Garner was age 34, born Illinois, Mary Ann was age 30, born Pennsylvania, Jasper S. was age 4, born Illinois, Roseanna was age 2, born Iowa and Willard W. was an infant. Apparently their first son Charles Garner (born in 1849 in Lawrence County, Illinois) had died before the 1856 Census. According to A LOCAL HISTORY OF YELLOW SPRING AND HURON TOWNSHIPS IN DES MOINES COUNTY, IOWA written by J. W. Merrill which contained sketches of people and events in the 1840s and 1850s; "The Garners.---James and Dan Garner were living out on the Bottom late in this decade, and later. James was a Justice of the Peace there, in the '50s. Dan was killed in an altercation with Wm. Innis. On trial, Innis plead self-defense, and was acquitted. The Garners moved away soon." Daniel was probably killed about 1859 leaving Mary Ann with four young children. She moved to Toolesboro, Iowa in Louisa County and was listed as a laundress on the 1860 census. Jasper S. was age 8, Rose Anna age 6, Willard age 5 and Angeline age 2. Also living with them were Mary Ann's twin brothers, Daniel and Jacob Sowash age 26. On 02 August 1864 Mary Ann married a mail carrier, Elijah Demoss. Rose would have been 9 years old. One story is that Elijah was a drug addict and Rose was made to get his supplies. She ran away at age 14 in 1869. Mary Ann Demoss died 24 October 1900 at the home of her daughter, Angeline Coughenour in Jefferson, Iowa and is buried in the Jefferson Cemetery. Rose Anna Garner was 25 years old when she married John McNeal in Aledo, Illinois. They lived in Tama County, Iowa for a few years before moving back to Mercer County, Illinois. John was a big man and Rose was tiny with red hair according to family history. Rose died 05 August 1938 and John died 20 February 1944. They are buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Millersburg, Illinois.
