Supposedly the family lived at Copita, in Duval Co., when Harry was born, but he was born at a hospital in Nueces Co. Mention has been made of the "family homestead" at Encino, which is now in Brooks Co. I was told the family was farming broom corn. At that time Texas ranchers were selling off some of their ranch land in order to recover from losses from a previous drought. Many midwestern farmers sold their property up north and bought farm land around Kingsville, Copita, Encino, Falfurrias, Riviera, Alice area. These farmers often lived in tents on their newly bought land until a home could be built. I was also told the Runkle family moved in this area because of Harold's serious asma problems. They raised cattle, and the drought continued, so it was Harold's job to burn the thorns off the prickly pear so the cattle could eat it. Harold once mentioned a sister that he road horses with in Texas. This was the same time that Poncho Villa was creating problems in the border area.
