For several months the relatives and friends of John BROST have been anxious about his health which has been gradually failing and altho everything possible was being done it seemed that there was no hope and when word was received Sunday announcing his death at the Chippewa Falls hospital. Saturday noon they had been prepared for it.
John BROST, or John as he is known to so many of our citizens, was born at Kriess, Kochem, on the Mosel, Rhine province, Germany, July 29, 1868 and attended parochial school about eight years. In 1883 the family came to Medford and John and his brother Anton bot the land where they have since made their home. It was hard work farming in those days and the boys went to camp to earn money to pay for the farm.
In February, 1892, John, who was driving his father's team in one of DUNCAN's camps near Westboro, met with such a serious accident that his life was despaired of. Both limbs were broken several times and his body was a mass of bruises. He was taken to the Chippewa Falls hospital where with excellent care he recovered tho he has been lame ever since. When he returned home, seeing hard work was now impossible for him, he went to the district school at the age of 26 to Miss Anna HULL and soon with much home study besides was able to secure a certificate and teach school which has been his occupation ever since. He became very proficient as a teacher and was always in demand. He taught the SCHUSTER school in Deer Creek seven years and and charge of his home school six years.
In 1897, he married Tresia KRIPLEAN and five children have been born to them, three boys and two girls, the oldest a girl ten and the youngest, a boy of three.
He has been repeated honored by his townsmen, having held the office of treasure and during the last two years supervisor of assessments. He was a faithful member of the Catholic Foresters, who have lost a very efficient officer.
His body was brot here Monday morning having been met at Abbotsford by a delegation of both Foresters and Eagles who accompanied him back to the home two miles east of the city.
The funeral was held Tuesday forenoon from the Catholic church where a very large number of friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect.
Besides a wife and family, he is survived by this father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Anton BROST, two brothers, Anton and Peter and one sister, Mrs. Andrew HIRT, of Hammel, who with many friends will ever cherish the memory of his kindly, patient, useful life.
