Note: He served in the army during the the 1st World War in the ASC, service number M2-099924. He was a driver and he would drive the supplies up to the front line. He was also know to make tea on bombs! He was wombed at the battle of the Somme in 1916. He was shot through the upper right leg. His brother was killed at Arres. According to family lore, William had met up with him on the battle field and had just finished talking to him. He turned around to leave when his brother was shot and killed. He was awarded, at least, the War Medel and the Victory Medal at the end of the War but he was not too interested in them. He left the army as a corporal. Between the wars he would take his children down to the sea side. He would hire a car until he was able to buy one. He joined the fire service at the start of the Second World War and was actively involved with it. When he was at a station near Portsmouth he and a colleague had to dive under a fire engine when the station was hit by a bomb. Both of them had to be dug out of the rubble. Servicemen stayed in his house during the Second World War so they could have a short brake from the fighting. After the Second World War he was awarded the Defence Medal. He continued his service in the fire brigade training drivers. He was forced to retire at the age of 70. He then got a job at Ewens car dealers in Maidenhead were he cleaned the cars before finally retiring. During his last few years he would be a bit quiet spending many hours in his bed room.
