Note: Neil died on 28th December, funeral held on Hogmany 31st December.
The reason being that the public holiday would have greatly delayed the funeral taking place.
Cause of death was a heart attack , he was suffering from terminal cancer at the time. The chemotherapy appears to have been to much for him to take.
Cause of cancer more than likely related to his work at Dounreay. Despite his union pursuing a claim and investigation for many years the government and Dounreay succeeded in that we , the family, decided for mothers sake to stop. We were getting nowhere after 10 years and his workmates silence was "bought" by Dounreay with the threat of lucrative retirement packages being at risk if they assisted in any way. Effectively we could go no further forward.
By way of "retribution" several of those workmates did not live that long into retirement to enjoy it. Cancer claimed them also. This is the very real and sinister side to the nuclear industry and what our government does in supposidly our name. Over the years the numerous reports of contaminations and failings in safety at Dounreay since my fathers death only confirm in my view that Dounreay and his work killed him. Safety proceedures today have lower limits than was the case in his day so Dounreay should have acknowledged that fact and that his death was atributed to this.
