Notes
a. Note:   Baptized at St Mary, Stepney, Whitechapel on August 8th 1802 at the same time as his brother Thomas. Against the christening his date of birth is given as March 21st 1802.
According to his father's will dated 1817, his father John Bannister Bailey had advanced him 120 to pay for an apprenticeship. This must have been a private arangement, between father John, James and the Master that James was placed with. Although the trade is not mentioned we know that James is referred to as an Engraver on different documents throughout his life. So this is the likely trade that James was apprenticed to.
The next documented event in his life we find at Fishmongers Hall..
 Court: 16th February 1826.
James Bailey of Delph Street, Long Lane, Southwark, ENGRAVER, son of JOHN BANNISTER BAILEY late Freeman deceased. Claims his Freedom by Patrimony ffees 1 .15s. 4d. (sic)

((signed)) John Gamon White . St. Southwark
John Durant, St. Mary at Hill.
The next event we find is of the marriage of James to Eleanor Hodkinson at St Peter, Liverpool Grove Walworth.
December 10th 1833 James Bailey, bachelor, of this parish, married Eleanor Hodkinson, spinster of this parish, by Banns.
In the presence of William John Bailey and Elizabeth Bailey.
William John and Elizabeth Bailey, James' brother and wife. (or possibly James' sister?)
As stated above James and Eleanor married in Dec. 1833 but in the parish register for St. John Horselydown we find the following baptisms all on the same day:- On May 11th 1834
James Bailey - born July 20th 1829, son of James Bailey, engraver and Eleanor Bailey.
William Bailey - born August 28th 1831 of James Bailey, engraver and Eleanor Bailey
Thomas Bailey - born April 4th 1834 of James Bailey, engraver and Eleanor Bailey.
So James and Eleanor had two children born before they married, the reason for this is not known.
James wife Eleanor died in 1849 (see her notes) and in 1851 we find the family on the census ref HO107/1562 folio 317V
