Note: James died on 11 January 1840, aged 11., buried at St. Mary Magdalene, Southwark: January 26th 1840. Address given was Minto Street, Southwark, and burial register gives his age as 10. James was killed at William Fear's Saw Mills in Bermondsey when he accidently fell into the workings of a (static) steam engine. "A coroners inquest was held at Guys Hospital, the Parish of St. Thomas in the Borough of Southwark on January 13th 1840 in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, before William Payne, Gentleman, Coroner for of our said Lady the Queen for the City of London and the Borough of Southwark, in the County of Surrey, on View of the Body of James Bailey now here lying dead, upon the oaths of (names of 15 men) good and lawful Men of the said Borough who being now here duly chosen, sworn, and charged to enquire for our said Lady the Queen, when, how, and in what Manner the said James Bailey came to his death, say upon their Oaths, that" "The said James Bailey being a male person of the age of eleven years and the son of James Bailey a Fellowship Porter and on the eleventh day of January in the year aforesaid at the Parish of Bermondsey in the County of Surrey being then and there turning a certain grindstone by the side of a certain steam engine then at work upon certain premises called the Bermondsey Saw Mills there situate it so happened that the handle of the said grindstone then and there accidentally bacame detached from the said grindstone and by reason thereof the said James Bailey then and there accidentally fell into and amongst the harness of the said steam engine and the said James Bailey was then and there accidentally drawn into the machinery of the said steam engine by means whereof the said James Bailey died then and there accidentally receive a mortal fracture of his pelvis and a mortal wound in his groin of which mortal wound and mortal fracture the said James Bailey on the same day and year last aforesaid at the said Parish of Saint Thomas in the said Borough and County did accidentally die and so the jurors aforesaid upon their oaths aforesaid do say that the said James Bailey in manner aforesaid accidentally casually and by misfortune came to his death and not otherwise. In testimony whereof, as well the said Coroner as the said Jurors have to this Inquisition set their Hands and Seals the Day, Year, and Place first above written. Also included in the Coroner's report are his hand written notes taken from witnesses (these notes difficult to read) but included were the statements from a Peter Ward, carpenter. a Harry Catherato(?) Sawyer, William Fear, proprietor - James Bailey of 18, Minto St. who stated he was the father of the said James Bailey and his son was 11 years old. and finally (unreadable name) doctor of Guys Hospital. From these witness statements Wm. Payne wrote the above result of the inquest.
