Note: On August 17th 1871 at St. Mary's Church, Milton, Glasgow after Banns according to the forms of the Scotish Episcopal Church.. James Bailey, Civil Engineers Clerk, bachelor aged 28 of 6, Elizabeth Cottages, Elizabeth Street, Walworth London, Father James Bailey, Gentleman and Mother Elleanor Bailey, formerly Hodgkinson (sic) deceased. married to Georgina Matilda Payne, age 27, of 11, Bucclouch Street Glasgow, father George William Payne, Commision Agent, and Sarah Ann Payne formerly Sherwood. Witnesses G.W. Payne and Ralph Edgar Payne. When James Bailey's home address in Elizabeth Street, Walworth was checked, he was found lodging at the address of Charles and Mary Ann Withall, Mary Ann turns out to be James' older married sister. Her's and Charles Withall's marriage certificates gives her father as James Bailey; Engraver, see more under mother Eleanor Bailey's notes. After James and Georgina's marriage the couple move down to Peckham, South London where their first children are born. James Bailey died in 1920, he left no will. His son James Nicolson Bailey was granted Letters of Administration. During his life time he worked as a Civil Engineer and in the 1860's he was known to be working in Spain, in the Seville area. A letter from Robert A Payne, his future wife Georgina's younger brother, letter dated 1868 survives. It was from the Payne's home address in Glasgow and sent we believe to Spain, or to London: in the letter Robert refers to the family looking forward to James' next visit when he could tell them all about the bull fights and other adventures James had while working in Spain. Another letter to James dated 1880 is from the firm of contractors in Glasgow who James had worked for in Spain. It states it had no work for him at the present, but would keep him in mind should new work come up. From these two letters it is possible to understand that James and Georgina had met sometime before 1868 and that they had known each other at least four years before they married in 1871. James and Georgina lived in Peckham south London from 1871 to sometime between 1875 to 1877. (Son James Nicolson was born in Peckham in 1875 and daughter Georgina Sarah was born in Blagdon, Co. Durham in 1877). The family moved to Ryton, Co Durham and remained there for some years. Georgina Matilda died in 1913, and some time after this date it is possible that James snr. moved to the Manchester area to live near his son James Nicolson Bailey.
