 South Dakota Naturalization Records Index
 First Papers:
Name:Miller, Carl; Filed in McCook Co., Nov 7, 1904
 Second Papers
 Name:Mueller, Carl; County of residence:Aurora; Birth year:1874; Country Renounce:Germany; Page:31; Location:V6169 (Nov 1913)
Immigration: Arrived on SS Pennsylvania Oct 16, 1902, at Ellis Island, New York. The ship's manifest lists him as Carl Friedrichs (his Mother's maiden name), 27 years of age, with an occupation of "coachman". He was going to Alexandria, SD, sponsored by his maternal uncle Henry Friedrichs.
Family stories tell that he was a coachman (horse drawn coaches) in the staff of William II Emperor of Germany. He had some sort of altercation with a soldier or officer while driving coach. He left the country using his mother's maiden name. The family stories say he changed his name on naturalization from "Miller" to "Mueller". The naturalization papers do show this, however, when his Father and Mother immigrated a year and a half later they came under the name "Mller" Anglicized to "Mueller", but are listed as "Miller" on the 1910 census and Uncle August is listed as "Miller" on the 1910 & 1930 census . No other records of "Miller" other than Grandfather using it when he arrived in the USA can be found. The 1910 census already lists him as "Mueller".
Carl Henry and Lizzie Mueller moved from the farm place outside Plankinton into Emery SD in February of 1942.
