a. Note:   t Gut Eppinghoven and attended the gymnasium in Neu�. After school Carl learned farming with his brother-in-law Sch�ller and went to the U.S. in 1883. The married couple operated a farm in Polk County near Shelby, however, in 1890 they returned to Germany. First he farmed Bodenheim but through a lease arrangement by the brother Franz he took over Rittergut Bovenberg where Otto Thelen and Konrad Herhahn and his son Fritz Herhahn had once farmed. After 1905 the family moved to Neu� and Carl worked with the Rhenish Farmer's Association as a technical consultant. He was instrumental in founding the Family Association Thelen-Herhahn-Katterbach in the 1920's.
