a. Note:   He came to America in 1853. He was followed by his brother in 1855 who stowed away on the ship. Frederick's fiancee, Mary and her parents were also on the ship as paid passengers. Mary smuggled food to Frederick's brother in the cattle hold during the crossing. His brother left Germany to escape mandatory military service in Germany.

  He filed a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen of the U.S. on September 14, 1868. He was admitted ot citizenship September 21, 1870. His residence was Southhampton Twp., Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. His former allegiance was to Prussia. It was at this time he anglicized his name from Haselroth to Hesalroad.
  His brother (name unknown) kept the original spelling of the name.
  Fern Stauffer had in her possession (in the 1960's) a Lutheran hymnal with name Johann Haselroth inscribed inside.
  They all sailed from Bremerhaven.
