Note: Bert was the second son and third child of Matthew and Maud. He went to Cootarring school, a small one teacher school not far from home. One of his teachers was a 'Miss Rix" who later in life wrote books as Rix Weaver. 'Behold New Holland' and 'New Holland Heritage' were two of the books she had published about the early history of Western Australia. Bert used to go away with a shearing team when he was a young man - probably before his father died. He was only 29 when his father died and he took on most of the responsibilities for running the farm. His older brother William never worked on the farm and his younger brother Mathew was disabled and not able to carry out heavy work. He had an official exemption from going to the second world war because of his role as a farmer. It was about 1950 when Bert first had a tractor on the farm - a Fordson Major was a big advantage over the team of horses. The horses were named Lottie, Lofty, Daisy, Sox, Darkie, Micky, _________________ and _________________.
