My gg grandmother,Mary E.Ginn who married Thomas Housely Cox,was a sister of Melissa Ann Ginn who married John Wm Cowan. They were daughters of Jesse Ginn and his 2nd wife Tabitha Brewer.

Jesse Ginn was married twice.By his first wife,name unknown,he had the following children:Edmund,Moses, Strauder/Strother,Jane,Martha"Patsy",Sarah,Querlis,Happy and Anna. He was a widower by 1820 and married Tabitha Brewer 1824/25 while living in Franklin Co.,TN.They had the following children: Jesse Jr.,Apaline,Melissa Ann,Caroline,Mary E., William,Jackson and Rueben. Probate Records in St.Clair Co.,AL clearly list all the above children and spouses of most. I am the gg granddaughter of Mary E. Ginn (d/o Jesse and Tabitha)who married Thomas Housley Cox in 1849 in St.Clair Co.,AL. I would be glad to exchange info.Please e-mail me "off the boards."

The Cowan line goes to South Carolina.... with all the Cowan matches...I find that VERY interesting... Melissa GINN married William cowan in 1845 at St Clair, Co. I am Gary Cowan, son of Claud Cowan, Son of Claud Emerson Cowan, son of Edward Cowan whose parents were John William Cowan and Melissa Ann Ginn, whose parents were Jesse and Tabitha Ginn.
Melissa Ann Ginn's sister, Apoline Ginn, married John William Cowan's brother Samuel Cowan. Hence their children were "double cousins".
One of John William Cowan's children was named Apoline "Puss" Cowan after her aunt. Another was named Strauder after his uncle Strauder Ginn. Strauder and Querlis were used as names for sons in later generations as well.
I would enjoy corresponding with you about the family. I understand you have info on the Alabama Ginns. I am a beginning genealogist.

Jackie, The group photo was taken between 1905 when Ed married Lillie McClellan, and 1916 when Melissa Cowan died. From the apparent ages I would guess more toward 1916 than 1905. Claude Emerson Cowan's mother was Jennie Lu Clower, a daughter of Daniel F. Clower and Sarah Jane (Nunn) Clower. Claude was Ed Cowan's only child. Jennie Lu Clower's mother died of typhoid fever in 1873 when the family was living in western Cooke County, Texas; her father and one of the older brothers came back from a trail drive in bad weather and died of pneumonia about 1878. Her parents are supposed to be buried in Antioch Cemetery in eastern Montague County, Texas. Claude Emerson Cowan was born 21 or 25 Dec 1887, our family bible says Jennie Lu died in Feb. 1888. Because of these circumstances I do not think the photo is Sarah Jane Clower. Now, as I think of it there is one other possibility. After Jennie Lu died, Claude Emerson was taken to live with Jennie Lu's aunt Amelia Catherine (Nunn) Zachry up in Clay County along the Red River. So Amelia Zachry would be his great-aunt, but he might have thought of her as grandma. Here is a photo of her, in the bottom left of the photo.
