a. Note:   There is a Paine family on the 1870 Census in Chickasaw Co. MS that lists a Theodore Paine b NC age 39 living with a WIlliam Paine age 28, Pheby Paine age 20, and Ella Paine age 2. I think that William and Pheby are married with a 2 yr old Ella.
  The 1880 Census for Neal's Store in Chickasaw Co. MS lists a William W. Payne with wife "Febyan" whom I think to be Phoebe. It lists the following chilren: Nancy E. (Ella?), Mandella, James D., Emma, William R. (Robert?), and Anna.
  1900 Census Birmingham AL: Phoebe Payne, children James, Emma, Robert, Mary, Ludie, Evelyn, John and Bessie. Also living with them was a boarder: Hugh Jackson.
  1910 Census Birmingham AL: Phoebe Payne, daughter Emma Payne, Hugh Jackson (son in law), daughter Ludie(Payne) Jackson, and grandsons Hugh and Harold Jackson
