Note: Oregonian Newspaper Sunday October 19, 1930 PEDESTRIAN, STRUCK BY AUTO, SUCCUMBS Albert B. Gottschalk, 55, prominent for many years in Portland Masonic affairs, was injured fatally at 7:45 (am) yesterday morning when he was struck at Union Avenue and Skidmore Street by an automobile driven by Marvin Cole of 666 East Irving Street. Mr. Gottschalk died at St. Vincent's hospital a few minutes after noon. Cole was arrested on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Traffic Investigator Wiles said the brakes of Cole's automobile were defective. John E. Davis of 979 East Thirty-second Street North, a witness, said Mr. Gottschalk was crossing Union Avenue from East to West to board a south-bound street car and apparently became confused. Mr. Gottschalk was the last surviving charter member of the Shrine band, his family said. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge, Oregon Commandery, Knights Templar and of Gul Reazee grotto. He had been a resident of Portland 20 years, coming here from Minneapolis, and for some years had been auto dispatcher for the street railway company. He is survived by his widow (Edna Maud Devereaux Gottschalk), two daughters, Katherine and Jane Gottschalk of Portland, and three brothers, Arthur, Frank and Edward Gottschalk, all of Lancaster, New York as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gottschalk of Lancaster, New York. Funeral services for the late Albert B. Gottschalk will be held Tuesday, October 21, at 7:30 PM at the Masonic Temple, West Park and Main streets. Committal, Portland Crematorium. The Morning Oregonian, Tuesday, October 21, 1930 Coroner Calls Inquest Dr. Earl Smith, Multnomah County coroner, announced yesterday that an inquest would be held this afternoon at 1:30 in room 570 courthouse over the death of Albert B. Gottschalk, 55, who was injured fatally Saturday night when he was struck by an automobile at Union Avenue and Skidmore Street. The automobile which struck Gottschalk was driven by Marvin Cole, 666 East Irving street.
