Notes
a. Note:   er's farm. The system with crofters was a good way for the landowners to secure and maintain the laborers on the farm.
The crofters could not afford to have farmhands or maids. Instead it was common for the crofters to send away their older children to other farms to take positions as maids or as farmhands. The right of use of the croft was inheritable. Around 1860, there were approximately 100,000 crofts in Sweden. Many crofts were replaced with tenancies paid with cash in the end of the 19th century.
Note:   A crofter owned their farmhouse but had to pay rent to their landowners for their land. The rent was paid in manpower which means that they had to work a certain amount of days per year on the landown
